Delicious Kerala Recipes

Kerala, God’s own country has its unique cuisine which has fans all over the country. With an abundance of coconut trees, coconut/coconut oil is an important ingredient in most of their dishes. Kerala recipes like appam, avail, sadhya and fish varieties speak of their diverse cuisine.

Fish from both sea and salt water are used in the Kerala kitchen. The Kerala style fish curry or meen curry is prepared using native fish with coconut or coconut milk. Neymeen, karimeen and chemmeen(prawn) are other varieties.

Kerala, the land known for its authentic spices is famous for its mutton and chicken recipes. Kerala mutton biryani, Kerala mutton curry are a few to point out. Kerala mutton roast is famous for its aromatic preparation and presentation. Kerala chicken biryani has its unique method of preparation. Malabar chicken biryani, Thalaserry chicken biryani are a few to mention. Kerala chicken curry is prepared in two ways, either with or without coconut milk. Coconut milk gives a unique flavor to the dish. The Kerala chicken fry with the traditional spices is a famous dish in the state.

Even if not a native dish, fried rice is also prepared in Kerala style with spices. Kerala vegetable stew is dish made from various vegetables and can be matched with appam. Speaking of appam, it is dish made from rice flour and coconut. The mere appearance with the fluffy interior and the crispy edges makes it look like a piece of art!

Kerala puttu is another trademark dish. It is prepared from rice flour and coconut and steamed in the shape of small cylinders. It can be served with Kadala curry or their native variety of banana. Idiyappam and Ada are some of the other Kerala breakfast options. Since the appam, puttu and idiyappam are steamed dishes, they prove as healthy options too.
