Hilsa Fish Curry :
India is paradise for those who love food. The variety of dishes and flavor found in India are sheer numerous. Non-Vegetarian dishes that are found in India are incalculable. Among the Non-vegetarian dishes, Fish recipes are famous in Eastern India. Bengali community in particular loves eating fish. Hilsa is a kind of fish found in the river Ganga, is loved most by Bengalis. There are many different kinds of Hilsa recipes found all over West Bengal. One such recipe is Hilsa Fish Curry. Every Non-Vegetarian Bengali has eaten this preparation at least once in their lifetime and many binge eat it.
Hilsa Fish Curry is called by many other names like Fish Curry with Mustard paste and coconut milk, Bengali Fish Curry, Fish Jhol, Macher Jhol, Bengali Mustard Fish Curry, Hilsa Coconut Curry, Illish Maach Narkel Diye, Narkel Illish Recipe, Ilish Machher Jhol, etc.
Hilsa Fish curry is an easy to cook sea food recipe. It takes around 30mins of time. Since this curry is easy to cook bachelors can also cook it. This preparation can be served as main course for lunch or dinner and it can also be served as side dish with Roti, Chapati or Rice.
As the name suggests, the main ingredient of this curry is Hilsa fish. Hilsa contains huge amounts of Vitamin and Minerals in it. This fish is good for heart, it clears vessels and is good for eyesight. The other main ingredient of this recipe is Mustard which in itself is full of nutrient. So, all in all, this recipe is good for health as well as delicious.

- Hilsa fish - 1/2 Kg
- Mustard Paste - 2 Tbsp
- Coconut Paste - 2 Tbsp
- Green Chili - 4 nos.
- Mustard Oil for Shallow fry
- Kalonji Seeds - 1/4 Tbsp
- Turmeric Powder - 1/4 Tbsp
- Salt as needed
- Water as required
Cut fish into long horizontal pieces as shown in the picture. At times you may find fish eggs. Keep it along for frying.
Take some mustard seeds and make it a paste. Grind ½ cup of grated coconut into paste. Split the green chilies.
Marinate fish with pinch of salt and turmeric powder.
Shallow Fry the marinated fish in mustard oil.
In slow flame, Roast the fish on both sides till golden brown.
Heat another pan with 2 Tbsp, add kalonji seeds let them crackle, then add ¼ spoon of turmeric powder, green chilies, mustard paste, coconut paste, salt and pour some water blend it well without lumps.
Add fried hilsa fish. Cook it for 10 minutes. After the fish has observed the water well. Transfer the hilsa fish to a cup and serve it with rice.
