Papad or Papadum is an integral part of Indian cuisine. These are completely unique throughout the world. Papad recipes are in Indian households for ages. Therefore, they have become an important part of Indian culture. There are several types of Papad recipes found throughout India. One such recipe is Onion Happla. This recipe originates from South India. Onion Happla is known by various other names like Onion Vadagam, Poha Onion Fryums, Onion Egg Curry, Avalakki Onion Sandige, Village style of Onion Hapala, Onion Slide Dishes, etc.
Preparing Onion Happla requires expert level cooking skills. As the name suggests, the main ingredient of this preparation is Onion and the other main ingredient is Rice. This preparation is actually a variant of Rice Papad preparation. Hence, Onion and chopped chillies are added to the dough made out of Rice powder. In order to increase the flavour as well as the nutritional value. Like any other papad recipe Onion Happala is also sun dried for 1-2 days.
As a result, Onion Happala is a nutritious dish. It also serves as a side dish along with any main course. Many consume it as snacks for time pass. This preparation goes well with Sambar rice, Curd rice, Tomato Rasam, Tamarind rasam, Kollu Rasam, Vegetable sambar, bisibelabath, etc and the list is endless. Onions contain Vitamin C and help in controlling blood sugar and rice provides energy and Vitamin B1. So, all in all Onion Happala is nutritious and tasty dish.
Finally, one can prepare Onion Happala at home or can buy them from market. - Chopped Onion - 2 nos.
- Green Chilly Chopped - 2 nos.
- Salt as needed
- Rice - 1 Cup
- Water - 1 Cup
Take a cup of rice and clean it. .
Wash the rice twice with water.
Strain the excess water from the rice and spread it over clean cotton cloth to drain excess water. Keep it for few minutes till water get evaporated.
Finely chop onion and green chilies.
Grind the wet dry rice in a mixer. Make into coarse powder.
Add chopped onion and green chilies to coarse grinded powder in a mixer.
Make it as a fine paste.
Make the dough into small sized balls. Adjust the dough consistency with water. If the dough is too watery means add rice flour.
Flatten a small sized ball using rolling pin.
Arrange the Flattened happla to the wet cloth. Sun dry it. After 1 or 2 days the corner of the happla get shrink. Flip the other side to dry. When there is no moisture in it, take it for use. Keep store it for long days.
